About Glasgow City Centre
Situated in the lowlands of Scotland, Glasgow is the most
important city of this part of UK. It is crossed by River
Clyde and it was initially a Bishopric during the medieval
times. The Glasgow University built during the 15th century
became a significant centre of the Enlightenment and of the
later Industrial Revolution. Ship manufacturing was an
important source of revenue during the Victorian era. Most
important Scottish businesses have their headquarters here.
The banks of River Clyde were populated during prehistoric
times so there is a rich history of human presence in this
area. The city motto-“Let Glasgow flourish” has to do with
the legendary figure of St Mungo who contributed much to the
advancement of this settlement. The saint’s figure appears
on the city coat of arms as well. All these are historic
facts recorded in the layout and architecture of the city
centre.
Lying on the north side of River Clyde, the centre spans in
a network of roads around George Square and Glasgow City
Chambers. The numerous statues in the square, among which St
Mungo’s statue is also present, are meant to testify of this
place’s impressive history. Political leaders, artists and
explorers are commemorated this way.
The centre brings together numerous theatres, cinemas and
museums such as the Theatre Royal or McLellan Galleries.
Large commercial areas on Buchanan St., Argyle St. and
Sauchiehall St. make of this part of the city the perfect
spot for shopping.
